Nepal Electricity Authority Executive Director Kulman Ghising says that the development of the hydropower sector is possible through public investment.
The Nepal Economic Journalists Association said that despite the risks involved in investing in IPO projects, shares should be opened under regulation.
The Electricity Authority has said that it has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) worth Rs. 12,000. Although 3,500 MW projects are currently operational, only 1,100 MW have been produced in winter.
The Electricity Authority said it is in favor of opening a PPA to supply 28,500 MW of electricity.
‘Currently, not all projects with PPA have entered into the construction phase,’ said Executive Director Ghising. ‘How appropriate is it to demand that new PPAs be made instead of building them?’
He said that the trend of only occupying projects by entering into PPA agreements with the authority should end. The Nepal government has guaranteed India income when the cross-border transmission line signed with India is operational.
The Nepal Electricity Authority, which has assets worth 7 trillion, is in the process of opening primary shares to the public. The authority is preparing to issue 20 percent shares, he said.
