Gorkha. Heavy snowfall has occurred again in North Gorkha. Local Nima Lama has informed that the heaviest snowfall has been occurring since last night this winter.

‘This is the second snowfall since last night after a long drought,’ he said. ‘Although there was normal snowfall two days ago, the snowfall today is the heaviest snowfall this season.’

Lama said that there has been snowfall from Samdo, the northernmost village of North Gorkha, known as Nubri Valley, to Samagaun and Syala. The snowfall, which started at 12 midnight, has been continuing. In Samdo, snow has accumulated about one foot above the ground. Snow has fallen as far as Syala.

The heavy snowfall has affected the lives of locals in Nubri Valley, Samagaun and Syala areas. Lama said that there are also problems with telephone and internet services. “Solar-powered telephones and internet are intermittent,” he said. “It seems that all services will be affected until the snowfall stops.” Guide Surya Khanal informed that domestic and foreign tourists who reached the area on Saturday evening were also in trouble due to the snowfall.

It is not possible to take tourists to Larke Pass, he said. “We are taking shelter in the hotel in Samdo along with the tourists.” He said that tourists who climb Manaslu Mountain through that area of the Manaslu trekking route and go to Manang via Larke Pass have been affected.

Since the snowfall began after a long time, the locals have become restless. Although the snow affects life, the locals are happy because the food crop production will be good. Local farmers in the Syala area have already planted Karu but have not been able to grow, so they are happy that Karu farming will be good with this snowfall.

Similarly, since farming will begin in Samagaun and Samdo after a month, the Lama said that the snow will loosen the land and make it easier to cultivate. Karu, barley, potatoes, fenugreek and chickpeas are cultivated in Samagaun and Samdo. Locals say that only the weather is cloudy and the conditions are normal in the Chum Valley.
