Kathmandu. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said that an agreement to end the Ukraine war should not be imposed on Kiev, after US President Donald Trump agreed to start talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. European countries have objected to Trump’s pressure to end the war, blaming Russia for the war in Ukraine.

“The next task is to make sure there is no imposed peace,” Scholz told news outlet Politico in an interview. After speaking with Putin on Wednesday, Trump said talks would begin “immediately” to end the conflict that began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine nearly three years ago. Earlier on Wednesday, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said Ukraine’s goal of returning to its pre-2014 borders was “illusory” and that Kiev’s desire to join the US-led NATO alliance was “unrealistic.”

Hegseth also made it clear at a meeting of Ukraine’s military backers in Brussels that the United States would not deploy troops on the ground. “Instead, any security guarantees should be backed by capable European and non-European forces,” he said. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius responded on Thursday, saying it was “regrettable” that the Trump administration had given Russia “discounts” before peace talks in Ukraine had even begun. “In my opinion, it would have been better to talk about Ukraine’s possible NATO membership or possible territorial losses at the negotiating table,” Pistorius said ahead of a NATO meeting in Brussels. Scholz said in the interview that transatlantic unity “must always be ensured.”

“It is absolutely clear to me that there can be no solution in which the United States is not involved,” he said. The chancellor also ruled out sending German troops to Ukraine at the moment. “Everyone knows that this is out of the question now,” he said. He said it was unclear at this stage under what conditions Ukraine would be ready to agree to a peace deal.

“Ukraine needs the opportunity to develop ‘even after the peace deal’,” he said. “This means having a ‘strong army’ that is bigger than it was before the war and equipped with Western weapons.” Earlier, US President Donald Trump had warned that Ukraine could one day become Russian. European nations have expressed their disagreement after Trump, who has close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, pressured Ukraine to stop the war that would cost it dearly.

Trump has said that Ukraine should give the US $500 billion worth of natural resources to the US.
