Terhakune Pokhari is a favorite among domestic tourists

Ilam. Located at the junction of Mai Municipality-1 and 9 in southern Ilam, Terhakune Pokhari has recently become a favorite among domestic tourists. There is a crowd here every weekend to visit, take pictures, shoot videos and have a forest feast.

The attraction of domestic tourists has increased after the development of infrastructure and the operation of boats, which were initiated by the locals, were launched. Local Subarna Rai said that it has become an excellent destination for domestic tourists due to its biodiversity, natural beauty and accessibility. ‘There is a crowd of tourists visiting the pond on Saturdays and public holidays,’ he said.

The Terhakune Pokhari Tourism Festival is being held in Mai Municipality from today with the aim of promoting tourism. The festival is being organized by the local Barabhanjyang Community Forest Users’ Organization at the junction of Mai Municipality-1 and 9.

The festival, which will run until Falgun 3, will promote tourism while preserving local indigenous culture, art, literature, music and history, informed the chairman of the festival organizing committee, Padam Rai. He said that cultural tableaus and costumes of various ethnic groups including indigenous Limbu, Rai, Magar, Tamang will be displayed at the festival.

‘It is our effort to promote tourism while preserving the indigenous culture, art, literature, music and history of the indigenous people of this land.’ For this, separate programs have been scheduled for all three days. Chairman Rai said, “Each day, costumes will be displayed along with tableaux reflecting the identity and culture of different castes.”

A musical program, ‘Yalambar Sanjh’, has been scheduled for each evening to support the installation of the statue of the first king of the Kiratis, ‘Yalambar’. The program will feature performances by singer and musician Krishna Bhakta Rai on the first day, comedian Padam Rai on the second day, and comedian Wilson Bikram (Tokme Budha) on the third day.

Similarly, the Limbu caste’s Dhannach, Palam, Chhyabrung dance, the Rai caste’s Sakela Sili, the Tamang caste’s Selo, the Magar caste’s Maruni, and the Khas Arya caste’s Sangini dance will be performed, he said. Mai Municipality Mayor Khamba Singh Limbu informed that he is confident that the festival will help in further promoting Terhakune Pokhari and promoting tourism.

‘For the past four years, the locals here have been organizing the festival every year,’ he said. ‘I am confident that this is helping in further promoting Terhakune Pokhari and promoting tourism.’ He said that the municipality will always support the promotion and protection of Terhakune Pokhari.

The road expansion to Terhakune Pokhari, located 34 kilometers south of the headquarters, is ongoing. Chairman Rai is confident that this pond will become a major destination for more and more tourists as other physical infrastructure is also being built in a hurry.
