Bhandari mentioned that the 140-meter-high dam to be constructed by the project on the Seti River on the border of Rishing-1 and Byas Municipality-5 will affect the movement of fish and will cause damage, so the conservation plan has been launched in the Madi River to compensate for this.

‘The dam to be constructed by the project will disrupt the natural flow of the Seti River, putting the lives of native and urban fish species found here at risk. As a compensation for this, the fish conservation plan has been implemented in the natural flow towards the Madi River,’ Bhandari said. According to him, the initiative to implement the plan has been initiated in the upper coastal area of Madi from the confluence of Seti and Madi rivers.

For the implementation of the plan, a Fish Conservation Coordination Committee has been formed comprising the mayors of Byas in Tanahun and Madhya Nepal municipalities in Lamjung, the chairmen of Madi and Rupa rural municipalities in Kaski, representatives of Tanahun Hydropower Limited and Bote Samaj.

Project Chief Bhandari informed that the committee was formed as per the provisions of the Local Government Operation Act, 2074 BS, as the issue of fish conservation in the Madi River is a matter of common concern and partnership of local municipalities.

He said, ‘Due to the dam, the native fish found here As the lives of Asala and Sahar species of fish are at risk, a fish conservation plan has been implemented in the upper coastal area of Madi, about 45 kilometers from the confluence of the Seti and Madi rivers, for conservation.’

According to him, wards no. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 10 of Byas, wards no. 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 of Madhya Nepal, wards no. 1, 3 and 7 of Rupa, and wards no. 4, 5, 9, 10, 11 and 12 of Madi Rural Municipality have been considered as affected areas.
