Galkot. Three local levels in the district are working to conserve fish in rivers and streams. Galkot Municipality started protecting fish three years ago, allowing youth to fish and earning income by doing so in accordance with the Aquatic Conservation Act.
Fish production has increased after implementing a policy of banning fishing during the fish spawning season, prohibiting fishing with pesticides and current, and taking action against illegal fishermen.
Galkot Municipality spokesperson Him Bahadur Bhandari said that production has doubled after allowing fish to grow during the spawning season.
Galkot Municipality has formulated and implemented a law to protect the fish and provide employment to locals. .
Following Galkot, Kathekhola Rural Municipality has also brought the Aquatic Wildlife Conservation Act through its 16th Village Assembly. Tej Bahadur Thapa, the vice-chairman of the rural municipality, informed that the act was brought to protect the fish found in Kathekhola, provide fishing permits for a specific period of time, and avert the problem of migratory fish.
The Aquatic Wildlife Conservation Act states that fish cannot be killed by current, poisoned, and trapped. The rural municipality has stated that after the implementation of the act, endangered fish species will be protected and the community will have an increased source of income.
‘By forming groups in the river area, emphasis will be placed on conservation and production. The rural municipality can even build infrastructure in the river to increase fish production,’ said Vice President Thapa. ‘After giving the community the responsibility of protecting the river and fish, they will be able to earn income.’
