Terhathum. A one-day interaction program with stakeholders of the district related to disability prevention and rehabilitation has been completed in Myanglung of the district.
Karuna Foundation Nepal organized an interaction with stakeholders including local people’s representatives, political parties and representatives of various organizations on Monday.
A disability prevention and rehabilitation program is being implemented in Terhathum in partnership with the provincial and local governments and Karuna Foundation. Kamal Koirala, Senior Program Manager of Karuna Foundation Nepal, said that the interaction program was held in the same context.
He informed about the work done in the district under the Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Program so far.
According to him, so far, through the program, local levels have carried out district-level orientation, municipal-level orientation, agreements between the municipality and Karuna Nepal, appointment and training of CBR facilitators, and data collection of people with disabilities.
In addition, health check-ups, needs identification, and identity card distribution camps have been conducted for people with disabilities, and 1,212 people have been identified and disability identity cards have been distributed, said Program Manager Koirala. He said that health workers have been trained on birth defect identification, teachers and school nurses have been trained on functional limitations and disability in children.
Programs such as school health check-ups, birth defect identification, testing of children from 29 days after birth to under five years of age, and the formation and mobilization of volunteer groups have been carried out.
The program, run in partnership with the provincial government, local government, and Karuna Foundation, is expected to expand access to services for people with disabilities, said Karuna Foundation Coordinator Kedar Bhandari. .
He said, ‘After the program, the birth defect rate and congenital disability rate will decrease by 20 percent, the quality of life of 70 percent of disabled children and 20 percent of disabled adults will improve, 40 percent of public physical infrastructure (within the local level) will be accessible, and the local levels will continue the 80 percent disability prevention and rehabilitation program in collaboration with the provincial government.’
The total cost of the program, which will be run for three years, is 18.8 million from the provincial government, 18.8 million from the municipality, and 18.8 million from the Karuna Foundation, Bhandari informed. According to him, Rs 4.655 million has been spent so far.
Kapildev Singhak, program coordinator of Deurali Society Tehrathum, a participant in the interaction program, said that the disability prevention and rehabilitation program being run in the district is effective.
He said that despite working in a non-governmental organization for a long time and doing social work, he has not been able to work in the field of disability in such a subtle way so far. He expressed confidence that the program, run in a tripartite partnership between the provincial and local governments and the foundation, will benefit the community in the long term.
Provincial Assembly Member Kishor Chandra Dulal expressed confidence that this program will play a supporting role in disability prevention and rehabilitation.
He pledged to provide necessary support, saying that all parties should cooperate and coordinate to make this program successful.
