‘Those who abuse authority should be brought to justice’

Bagmati Province Chief Deepak Prasad Devkota has said that anyone who misuses authority and goes against the country, the people and good governance should be taken forward for a thorough investigation and impartial action. Addressing a function organized in Hetauda today on the occasion of the 34th foundation day of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority, he mentioned that the work done by the Commission against corruption has played an important role in maintaining good governance in the country.

Stateing that there are allegations that the commission will handle small corruption cases and submit numerical details but hesitate to handle big and institutional corruption cases, Province Chief Devkota suggested arresting all kinds of corrupt people, big and small, to prove those allegations wrong. Province Chief Devkota emphasized that it is necessary to overcome the disappointment of the people and win the trust of the people by taking a firm stand against corruption. He also urged not to lose foot in taking steps against dishonesty. He said that progress is visible in overcoming the challenges and said that the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority should be serious in this regard.

Suraj Chandra Lamichhane, Minister of Internal Affairs and Law of Bagmati Province and Government Spokesperson, informed that the provincial government is committed to minimizing the increasing corruption-related crimes in various districts of the province by keeping them under investigation. He informed that the provincial government has formulated various laws and regulations to maintain good governance in the province, guarantee human rights and assure the people that the government is ours. He said that efforts are being made to implement various ‘package’ programs in the budget of the current fiscal year to reduce poverty in those areas and raise the economic standard of the people.

On that occasion, Mahadev Pantha, Chief Secretary of the Bagmati Province Government, suggested that officials or ministries and departments holding responsible positions in the country should investigate and move forward within the scope of the law without encouraging corrupt practices. He expressed the view that the level of corruption can be significantly reduced only if people move forward within their respective jurisdictions and within the constitutional framework for the various interests of the people in a lawful manner.

Umakanta Acharya, Chief of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority, Bagmati, said that public complaints are being received about the increase in corruption related to public procurement in various wards of local bodies, health and education sectors in various districts of the province. The office should receive support from all sectors as it is realizing its responsibility to investigate and take action against corruption.

Bagmati Province Chief Devkota had presented awards to four outstanding employees of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority. The awardees are Branch Officer Indra Prasad Bhattarai, Deputy Subba Yamuna Basnet, Police Inspector Swagat Pokharel, and Assistant Police Inspector Birendra Karki, respectively.
