Karnali Province exports over Rs 4 billion in agricultural and livestock products

Surkhet. Karnali Province exports food grains, fruits, livestock and dairy products worth more than Rs 4 billion a year. According to the Ministry of Land Management, Agriculture and Cooperatives, Karnali Province, in the last fiscal year 2080/81, food grains, fruits, goats and dairy products worth more than Rs 4 billion were exported.

In the fiscal year 2079.80, food grains, fruits and goats and dairy products worth Rs 4 billion were exported from ten districts of Karnali Province. Karnali is mainly exporting indigenous crops such as corn, millet, kaguno, and phapar, while vegetables, vegetable seeds, oranges, apples, ginger, turmeric, and potatoes are also exported.

These items are exported to Nepalgunj, Butwal, Chitwan, Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Kailali and Kanchanpur in Banke, said Dhan Bahadur Kathayat, spokesperson for the Ministry of Land Management, Agriculture, and Cooperatives. According to him, about Rs 2 billion is received in Karnali every year from the export of agricultural produce. In the fiscal year 2079/80, Karnali Province had received Rs 1.79 billion from the export of agricultural goods. He said that in the last fiscal year, an income of about two billion was generated from agricultural products.

Similarly, Karnali Province has been earning an annual income of 2.3 billion rupees by exporting livestock products. The Livestock Directorate has stated that an annual income of 1.96 billion rupees is generated from the export of goats and sheep alone.

The Directorate has statistics that 123,000 metric tons of goats and sheep are exported annually. Similarly, an income of 303.3 million rupees is generated from the sale of milk. Animal products such as radipakhi, rabbit hats, and coat fabrics are exported from Karnali.

Increase in production after giving subsidy on milk

The Karnali provincial government has been providing subsidy on milk to milk producing farmers. It has been providing subsidy of Rs 10 per liter for milk produced by farmers from Humla, Jumla, Kalikot, Mugu and Dolpa in Upper Karnali and Rs 5 per liter for milk produced by farmers from Surkhet, Dailekh, Rukum West, Salyan and Jajarkot in Lower Karnali. As a result, farmers have started to be attracted to animal husbandry and milk production has also increased.

The ministry’s statistics state that 5,260 metric tons of milk is currently being exported annually, despite being consumed in Karnali. Ministry spokesperson Kathayat said, “In the past, powdered milk was used in Upper Karnali. When the provincial government started providing subsidies on milk, milk production has increased, and now the province is almost self-sufficient in milk.”

Kathayat said that the provincial government has introduced a youth-targeted program and that the government is running a special program for farmers who do business. He said that the provincial government has been providing interest subsidies to farmers who do business and recognizing and rewarding excellent farmers.
