Gulmi. UML has urged the main opposition Maoist Center to approve the ordinance brought by the government from the parliamentary parliament. UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has telephoned Maoist Center Deputy General Secretary Barshaman Pun Ananta and sought his support in the ordinance.
While addressing the Chandrakot Rural Municipality convention of Maoist Center Gulmi on Saturday, Pun said that Pokharel had telephoned him seeking his support.
The government had brought an ordinance to amend the Privatization Act-2050, an ordinance to improve the economic and business environment and increase investment, an ordinance on cooperatives and an ordinance on land. The government had submitted ordinances to the House of Representatives and the National Assembly in the first meeting of the winter session of parliament that began on 18th Magh. The ordinance was to be submitted for decision in the House of Representatives and the National Assembly meeting on Thursday. Despite having a comfortable majority in the House of Representatives, the government, which is in a minority in the National Assembly, had removed the issue from the agenda at the last minute. The government is under pressure to ensure that a legal vacuum will arise if the replacement bill is not passed by the federal parliament and approved by the President within 60 days.
He said that the UML leadership and Prime Minister KP Oli, who did not consider it necessary to even make a general announcement before the ordinance, extended a helping hand to them after they fell into a moral crisis. Pun said that the UML, which had bypassed them by trying to govern through the ordinance, started asking for help after it got into trouble. He urged them to withdraw the ordinance if they had good intentions to solve the country’s problems and bring the bill procedurally.
‘The government that claims two-thirds is trying to rule through the ordinance. When they agreed to amend the constitution, they tried to bypass us by saying that they had two-thirds. Now they are begging because they do not have a majority in the National Assembly. When I arrived in Palpa today, UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharelji called and asked for help with the ordinance,’ Pun said. ‘Until now, they had been boasting that we had two-thirds. Now he used to boast that he would bring in a two-party system. Now he has reached the point where he is requesting for help.’
In a different context, Pun accused the current government of protecting those involved in corruption, irregularities, state exploitation and smuggling. Speaking in Parliament on Thursday as the leader of the main opposition party, his chairman Prachanda demanded an investigation into the questions raised against him regarding Shera Durbar, and asked whether he was ready to investigate the questions raised against him. Pun commented that the state machinery, which is deciding not to prosecute ruling party leaders and activists involved in human trafficking and cooperative fraud one after another, is investigating and prosecuting opposition party leaders and the general public in a discriminatory and vindictive manner for crimes of the same nature.
‘The minister who has been questioned about human trafficking is not going to Japan. Japan is sending him back from the airport. The youths he took are in custody. He has been granted immunity because he is an MP from the UML. Questions are raised about Congress MPs. The government lawyer does not prosecute the case,’ Pun said, ‘In a case of the same nature, opposition party leaders are being dragged all over the country. Is this what happens in Nepal? Is this what democracy and the rule of law are? Whether the question is raised by the ruling party or the opposition. There should be a fair investigation against everyone. It is our belief that the investigation should be directed. “Our objection is that the state machinery has been used as a means of immunity for some and a means of retaliation against others.”
