Kathmandu. A technology has been introduced on the road in front of Padmakanya Multiple Campus in Bagbazar, Kathmandu, where pedestrians can turn on the traffic lights by pressing a button. The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has put the pelican crossing into operation on the road in front of Padmakanya from Wednesday.
Kathmandu Metropolitan City Traffic Expert Advisor Jagatman Shrestha said that keeping in mind the safety of pedestrians, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City has so far brought pelican crossings into operation at 36 places.
He said that the concept of this technology has been introduced to reduce road accidents and protect passengers. According to him, when using the pelican crossing, vehicles will stop for some time as soon as the passenger presses the button and the passenger can cross with confidence. Keeping in mind the safety of passengers, the Metropolitan City said that it is going to start the technology of lighting traffic lights in other places as well.
Locals are happy, saying that installing traffic lights at zebra crossings is an exemplary work for road safety. Sandhya Basnet, a student of Padmakanya Multiple Campus, believes that this technology will reduce road accidents. She has praised this work of Kathmandu Metropolitan City as accidents occur every month on the road in front of Padmakanya.
Bhagwati Sedhai, Head of the Population Studies Department of Padmakanya Multiple Campus, said that this technology has been introduced so that no one should lose their life in road accidents. She said that the standards adopted by Kathmandu Metropolitan City are the best in road safety standards. She informed that the time given by the technology for zebra crossing can be reviewed after some practice.
The Kathmandu Metropolitan City is working on installing pelican lights under the road improvement project.
