Nawalpur. This year, Nawalparasi (Bardaghat-East of Susta) has produced 90 million oranges. The area under orange cultivation in the district has increased, leading to an increase in production compared to last year.
Biswas Kafle, Information Officer at the Agricultural Knowledge Center, Nawalpur, said that oranges worth 71.8 million were produced last year. He said that after the implementation of the zone for sour fruits in the hilly areas of the district, the number of farmers cultivating oranges and the area under cultivation have increased. Last year, out of a total area of 226 hectares, oranges were cultivated, but income was generated from only 141 hectares.
‘Last year, only 1,227 metric tons of oranges were produced in the district, but this year 1,414 metric tons of oranges have been produced,’ said Information Officer Kafle. ‘This year, the area under orange cultivation in the district has increased to 256 hectares, and orange production has started on 161 hectares.’
The area under orange production in the district is increasing every year. “After the zone was implemented, farmers have been receiving subsidies for seedlings, along with mechanical and technical support,” he said. “That is why farmers are attracted to orange farming since there is not much production from other crops in the hilly areas.”
Orange farming is being done commercially in Boudikali and Bulingtar rural municipalities of the district and Ward No. 18 of Gaindakot Municipality. Information Officer Kafle said that 3,200 farmers are cultivating oranges in the district.
