Kathmandu. Three private sector organizations in Nepal have urged the immediate end of the strike program in the Pathibhara area. The Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the Confederation of Nepalese Industries and the Nepal Chamber of Commerce have expressed serious concern over the ongoing activities to protest the construction of a cable car to develop and promote tourism in the Pathibhara area and urged the immediate end of the strike program.
Issuing a joint statement, the three private sectors have said that the ongoing strike in the districts of Koshi Province over the issue of the project has disrupted the educational, economic and social life of the people there and that such activities will create a situation that will disrupt the investment-friendly environment for the development of the country’s infrastructure.
‘It is well known that the private sector plays an important role in the overall economic development of Nepal. Investment by the private sector in various infrastructure development and service sectors including industry, trade, banking, energy, agriculture, tourism, communications, and others has contributed significantly to the country’s prosperity. However, the recent activities that are being carried out to stop development work are sending a negative message to domestic and foreign investors investing in Nepal, so we urge the relevant stakeholders to be serious about this issue and create an environment where development work can be carried out smoothly and without hindrance.’ The statement states.
The private sector has already invested billions of rupees in tourism, providing direct and indirect employment to thousands of Nepalis, and the tourism infrastructure to be built in Pathibhara (Makkumlung) will provide safe, fast and convenient travel to other travelers, including the elderly, disabled children, and others who want to go there. The infrastructure construction will also promote religious, cultural and adventure tourism there, promote business through the development of agriculture and handicrafts, as well as create direct and indirect employment opportunities for locals and have a positive impact on the country’s tourism development, the statement states. .
In a context where the local level and local residents are of the opinion that the cable car should be built, the cable car should not be allowed to be built, and the private sector has taken the obstruction in the construction of the cable car, including external interference, as an attempt to stop the flow of development, the statement also states.
They have said that this obstruction in development is not only an opposition to a single project, but also creates a situation that disrupts the investment-friendly environment for the development of the country’s infrastructure, and it will send a negative message to investors investing in Nepal. Similarly, they have appealed to the local community, concerned bodies and stakeholders, including the private sector, to positively accept this development effort and to move the Pathibhara (Makkumlung) cable car project forward smoothly and without any hindrance, stating that the problem can be resolved through dialogue.
Meanwhile, the Koshi, Gandaki and Karnali Province Presidents of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry also issued separate press releases today, stating that the attention of the Federation Provincial Committee has been drawn to this issue. They have expressed the view that obstacles should be removed in the efforts being made for development at a time when the Nepali government and the private sector are struggling to develop the economy that has been in crisis due to the COVID pandemic and other factors and to restore it to its former state.
The external situation that has arisen while the state’s laws, regulations and systems have been granting approval and permission and starting construction work in accordance with the feelings and wishes of local citizens has tried to create obstacles to this project in any way, which has certainly not sent a positive message in the field of domestic and foreign investment that is essential for Nepal’s economic development. The statement issued by them states.
In the same statement, it is mentioned that the activities that are currently being seen against the cable car project being built under the leadership of the country’s business group, which is providing employment to tens of thousands of people by building tourism infrastructure in many places in the country and making a major contribution to the country’s economy through revenue, are certainly destroying the investment environment in the country, rather than creating it.
