Telecom is preparing to offer 25 percent shares to the general public: Communications Minister Gurung

Kathmandu. Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung has said that Nepal Telecom is ready to offer 25 percent shares to the public. Speaking at the 21st anniversary celebration of Nepal Telecom on Monday, Minister Gurung said this.

He said, “92 percent of the shares of the telecom belong to the government and only 8 percent to the public. Now it is necessary to offer at least 25 percent shares to the public.”

He also said that the government is ready to increase the public’s ownership in government-owned companies to 25 percent. He informed that since the government has not been able to reform public institutions, the government now has a plan to increase public ownership to 25 percent in institutions like Nepal Telecom and Nepal Electricity Authority.

He mentioned that the government is also preparing to give 25 percent shares of the Electricity Authority to the public. He said that since the government has a different perspective on the company, it is necessary to increase ownership by increasing public ownership so that the people can feel their ownership.

He said that public monitoring of the institution will increase and the management will also be made aware of the need to be sensitive to the general public and customers and maintain transparency. He said that Nepal Telecom needs to identify and work on areas of income. He informed that the time has come for telecom to focus not only on voice but also on data.

Nepal Telecom should expand its scope of work and services as well as move into changing areas. He said that increasing telecom’s work capacity is the need of the day. He said that telecom should become modern with the changing situation.

He said that it is necessary for the government to develop physical infrastructure including telecom, understanding that e-commerce is the main task for good governance. He said that the people will not be able to experience e-government until the physical infrastructure for the IT sector is built and 4G services reach all local level wards. He mentioned that telecom should make a program and be able to reach 4G services to villages within a year. He mentioned that it is necessary for the telecom to work to provide quality 4G services to every household in rural areas.

He directed the telecom to improve the quality of service by installing towers in areas where Nepal Telecom’s service is not available. He said that it is necessary to expand Nepal Telecom’s services to all districts of Madhesh Province. He said that Nepal Telecom needs to provide 4G services to 6,743 ward offices within a year.
