Doti. Dipayal Siliguri Municipality-5 farmer Jaya Bahadur Shahi has started commercial production of cow dung mushrooms. He has started mushroom cultivation for the first time by renting land near Zero Point in Dipayal Siliguri-5.
He has been producing virgin mushrooms and has also cultivated cow dung mushrooms with the help of the Agricultural Knowledge Center. Farmer Shahi has kept two hundred packs of mushrooms this time.
He said that he brought the compost fertilizer required for cow dung mushrooms from Hetauda and kept the mushrooms on Mangsir 30. He said, ‘I purchased 20 tons of compost at the rate of 50 per kilo, I brought mushroom seeds from Dhangadhi. The cost of mushroom production has been Rs 200,000 till the start of production.’
According to him, cultivating gobre mushrooms requires a little more effort than other mushrooms, said Shahi. Having studied agriculture, he said that cultivating gobre mushrooms requires a little more technical knowledge and that the most suitable room temperature for this mushroom is 22 to 25 degrees Celsius.
According to him, after opening the package, regular watering and temperature should be taken care of. He said, ‘These days, four to five kilos of mushrooms are being sold daily and I am preparing to go to the market in a few days to find a market.’ The price of cow dung mushroom is currently Rs 400 per kilogram.
The Knowledge Center has provided 50 percent of the cost to Kisan Shahi for the cultivation of cow dung mushroom. Gangadatta Awasthi, acting office chief of the Knowledge Center, said that after a successful trial in Rautkatte of Jorayal Rural Municipality last year, commercial cultivation of cow dung mushroom has been started from the current fiscal year.
He said that the assistance was provided to Kisan Shahi with the aim of commercially expanding cow dung mushroom cultivation, which is considered very important from a nutritional and economic point of view. Mushroom chili, mushroom soup, mushroom pakoda and other dishes are made from Gobre mushrooms.
Acting Chief Awasthi believes that now that the production of Gobre mushrooms has started in the district, it will be consumed in hotels and restaurants here. He said that this year, the Knowledge Center is also testing Shitake mushrooms and that the support given to mushroom farmers will continue.
