Lamjung. The reconstruction of Lamjung Palace has not yet been completed due to lack of budget. The palace, located at an altitude of 1,445 meters above sea level, is said to have been built in the 16th century.
The Department of Archaeology had started the reconstruction of the palace located in Gaunsahar, Besisahar Municipality-3, Lamjung, which is considered the birthplace of the Shah dynasty kings, for three years. According to the department’s engineer Govinda Adhikari, although the goal was to complete the construction within two years of the start of the construction, the construction could not be completed due to the government not providing the necessary budget.
He informed that there are still some remaining works to be done such as laying some walls of the palace, laying the walls of the Kalika temple, laying the roof, laying the timber for the roof, laying the gajur, plastering the palace, window and door frames, painting, and flooring.
While the reconstruction was started with a budget of 13.3 million in the financial year 2079/80, the government had allocated a total budget of 5 million in the last fiscal year. The palace is being reconstructed in its original style and form.
The palace will be three-story with a pavilion and the Kalika temple will be a pagoda (roofed style). The bricks, wood, and other construction materials required for the palace have been brought from Bhaktapur.
Rajendra Bohara, chairman of the Gaunsahar Kalika Temple Conservation and Management Committee, said, ‘Although a verbal agreement was made with the employees of the Department of Archaeology to complete the work within two years, the work was not completed even in the third year. Locals are worried that the work is still incomplete, as the stones and wood that are left behind are making it uncomfortable for visitors and tourists who come here for various festivals.’
He also said that locals have requested for a brass or copper roof. Ward No. 3 Chairman Chitra Bahadur Danai said, ‘Even in these years, the construction has not been completed, it should have been completed this year but it did not happen. We have been taking initiatives with the concerned bodies to complete the construction quickly, but due to lack of hearing, the construction could not be completed this year too due to low budget.’
Local Suresh Shrestha said that the government should have provided the necessary budget for the construction of such historical palaces at once, but due to repeated low budgets, the construction has been incomplete year after year. According to the management committee, the palace is spread over an area of 16 ropanis.
Lamjung is the birthplace of the Shah dynasty, and the Lamjung Palace is its legacy. In 1540 BS, Kalu Shah, the younger son of the Raja Kulmandal of Kaskikot, was made the king of the first Chaubise kingdom of Lamjung by Khajedura, Sukram Kyausa, Maghe Dura, Kushmakhar Ghimire and Laxman Dura of Lamjung.
It is mentioned in history that shortly after that, the army of the then Ghale Raja, who took over the reins of governance in Lamjung, killed Kalu Shah. After that incident, they brought the youngest son of the clan, Yashobahm Shah, back from Kaskikot and resumed the royal duties.
The inscription mentions that Yashobahm was installed on the throne on Sunday, 15 Asar, at 15 hours of the 15th day
