Government committed to protecting wetlands: Forest Minister Thakuri

Kathmandu. The government celebrated World Wetlands Day on Sunday with the slogan ‘Wetlands Conservation for the Future’. The Ministry of Forest and Environment celebrated Wetlands Day amidst a function to raise public awareness for the conservation and protection and promotion of wetlands.

Speaking at the program, Minister for Forest and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri said that wetlands are an important area in terms of ecosystem. He said that since hundreds of lakes in Nepal fall under wetlands and Ramsar sites, it is necessary to protect and promote them, and he also expressed the government’s commitment to the protection of wetlands.

He said that if timely attention is not paid to the protection of wetlands, a big problem will arise in the future, saying, ‘Nepal has been considered a very important area as a wetland. There are important wetland areas in the Himalayas, hills and Terai of Nepal. I myself am a resident of Mugu district and especially Rara Lake, which is listed as a wetland and Ramsar site. We can protect and promote wetlands. It is necessary to protect the various ecosystems and all aspects associated with wetlands.’

He said that it is necessary for everyone to work together to protect wetlands.
