Agency. Two NASA astronauts stranded at the International Space Station left the station for their first spacewalk together on Thursday, nearly eight months after they entered it. Commanders Sunny Williams and Butch Wilmore stepped out to perform maintenance and clean the station’s exterior to see if any microbes that had been released from vents during launch from Earth were still alive.

“Now we’re going,” Wilmore said as they left 260 miles (420 kilometers) above Spain. The pair were expected to stay at the space station for just a week after arriving last June. But their new vehicle, Boeing’s Starliner capsule, suffered so many problems that NASA decided to return it empty.

That left both test pilots and both retired Navy captains in orbit until SpaceX could bring them home. Their mission, which will be extended by 10 months due to SpaceX’s delay in launching their replacements, won’t take place until late March or early April.

Williams had spacewalked with another NASA astronaut two weeks earlier. It was Willmore’s first time out on the trip. Both have made several spacewalks during previous space station stays.
