Gandaki. 28.52 km of road has been blacktopped in the western (Pokhara-Jamune) section of the Pokhara-Muglin Road Project so far. According to the project engineer, Saujanya Nepal, 10.36 km of road remains to be blacktopped in that section. ‘Two and a half km remain to be blacktopped in Tanahun, and blacktopping is also being done in the Kaski section,’ he said, ‘The target is to complete the work within the next year.’
20.8 km of road has been blacktopped in Tanahun and 18.08 km in Kaski. Four lanes on both sides, 10.08 km in Tanahun and 4.39 km in Kaski, and two lanes (one-way) 7.98 km in Tanahun and 6.07 km in Kaski, informed Engineer Nepal. He said that a total of 10.36 km of road remains to be blacktopped, including 2.74 km in Tanahun and 7.62 km in Kaski.
Chinese construction company Yanhui Kaiyuan Highway and Bridge Construction had started work on the section since 2078 BS. ‘The latest physical progress of the project has reached 42 percent, and the progress for January is yet to be further,’ said Engineer Nepal. ‘Blacktop work is underway in places including Chauthe, International Airport in Pokhara, Amarsingh Chowk, Budhibazar, and construction has also picked up speed in the section from Tal Chowk to Gagan Dauda.’
The construction company is extending the work after the three-year contract period for the western section in Kaski and Tanahun expired last Bhadra. Blacktop has been completed in sections including Tharpu, Turture in Tanahun, and Lower Gagan Dauda in Kaski. Engineer Nepal informed that half of the road from Jamune in Tanahun to Seti Bridge in Pokhara will be six lanes and half will be four lanes.
He said that the construction of bridges on Biyajpur Khola and Seti River is also underway. “Along with the expansion of the road, the construction of infrastructure including bridges, culverts, drains and others is going on at a rapid pace,” said Engineer Nepal. “The construction company has committed to completing the construction within a year.” He said that although there were some delays in the initial phase due to the COVID-19 pandemic, work has recently picked up pace.
The project office has stated that nine of the 12 road bridges in the western section of 38.88 km are in the final stage of construction. Chinese construction company Yanhui Kaiyuan Highway and Bridge Construction has taken over the construction of the western section at a cost of Rs 7.40 billion 46 million. The expansion and upgrading work of the 81-km Pokhara-Muglin road is being carried out with the help of a loan from the Asian Development Bank. Construction company China Communication Construction had also started work on the 41.45-km eastern section since April 2078 BS.
The project office has stated that the eastern section will have six lanes in Damauli and Dumre Bazaar in Tanahun and the remaining section will have four lanes. The construction company had taken over the contract for the section at a cost of Rs 6.21 billion 31 million. The project office has stated that the Pokhara-Muglin road along the Prithvi Highway is being upgraded to four lanes, while the blacktop work on the eastern section (Jamune-Muglin) has reached the final stage.
