Manang. Farmers in the district have been attracted to collective farming. The Agricultural Knowledge Center has stated that the locals here are attracted to collective farming due to the scarcity of cultivable land.

Madan Regmi, head of the Agricultural Knowledge Center, said that farmers have been attracted to collective farming as the food produced here is consumed within the district. ‘The tourists coming to Manang will use the food produced here, so the farmers have been encouraged,’ he said. ‘This has made us excited.’

According to him, some farmer groups are also farming on lease of barren land. He said that this has increased the use of cultivable land. Roshni Ghale, president of Talchhahara Agricultural Group of Nason Rural Municipality-1, said that collective farming has become easier because the Knowledge Center provides assistance in seeds, fertilizers, and irrigation.

He said, “It has become easier because barren land can also be utilized and grants are received from the Knowledge Center.” He believes that collective farming has also helped women become economically stronger. Currently, there are two mixed groups here, while there are nine women-only farming groups. Collective farming is being done through three groups in Naso Rural Municipality-1 Talgaun, Naso-2 Nache Village, Naso-3 Khotropakha and Nigalaghari, Naso-4 Odar Village, Chame Rural Municipality-2 Thanchowk, Chame-1 Timang, Chame-5 Ward, Manang Ngisyang.

Traditional crops such as potato, karu, wheat, phapar, uba, kolu bodi are produced here. Farmers here are using technology to use traditional grains as food and snacks for tourists.
