Dhanusha. As Saraswati Puja approaches in various places in Janakpur and Dhanusha, sculptors here are busy making statues of Saraswati. Sculptors who are otherwise free have been kept busy by the approaching Saraswati Puja.
This year’s Saraswati Puja falls on Magh 21. Sculptors have been busy making statues targeting the same puja. Sculptor Chandradev Pandit said that the idols of Saraswati have been made from clay with the aim of earning money from the sale of idols used in worship.
Sculptors from Tinkauria Chowk in Dhanusha, Yadukoha Bazaar, Sabaila Bazaar, Bhathian, Birendra Bazaar, Godar, Dhalkebar, Mahendranagar, Saphi Chowk, Laxminiya Bazaar, Tarapatti Bazaar, Dhanushadham, Dharapani, Kurtha Bazaar, Mujelia in Janakpurdham, Campus Chowk, Vidyapati Chowk, Feroboi Hatiya, Bhutahi Pokhari Dill, Bindahi, Mahuwa, etc., are busy making idols of Saraswati.
Sculptor Ram Kumar Mandal has made 35 idols for this year. He has idols worth Rs 3,000 to 15,000 each. Sculptor Ram Narayan Pandit has been making idols for 35 years. ‘I have been making idols by going to different places as per the requirement,’ he said. Sculptor Chandradev Pandit’s main profession is making idols. He said that he will make idols worth Rs 5,000 to 30,000 for Saraswati Puja and sell them.
They say that it takes about four people five to 10 days to make an idol of Saraswati. Some sculptors have also provided employment to locals. The idols are made from clay, wood, paint, cloth and straw. The idols made especially for Saraswati Puja are taken to schools and homes on that day and worshipped by students and devotees. According to Hindu tradition, most community, private schools and educational institutions install idols to worship Goddess Saraswati.
Although Saraswati Puja is a religious tradition, sculptors say that there is a big business behind it. Dhanusha sculptor Pancha Pandit said that he earns a good income from idols during this time. He said that he earns more than Rs 150,000 during the Saraswati Puja period. He said that he has been receiving orders from various schools because he makes attractive idols. There is a demand for idols especially during Durga Puja, Vishwakarma Puja, Krishna Janmashtami and Saraswati Puja.
