Beni. Farmers have earned good income due to the increase in orange production in the district this year. According to Sanjeev Bastola, head of the Agricultural Knowledge Center, oranges worth Rs 334.6 million have been sold in the district according to the details of oranges sold from the orange pocket area.
According to him, the office had studied orange production through the crop cutting method. This year, 4,781 metric tons of oranges have been produced in all six local levels of the district.
Last year, 3,600 metric tons of oranges were produced and Rs 240 million was earned from the sale of oranges. Out of 820 hectares of land under orange cultivation in the district, only 425 hectares of orange trees bear fruit. The center has stated that oranges worth more than 60 million rupees have been sold from wards 3 and 4 of Beni Municipality alone.
Oranges from most parts of the district have been sold right from the tree. Currently, orange picking is underway in places such as Marek in Beni Municipality and Dosalle in Annapurna Rural Municipality.
Traders have purchased oranges from farmers’ gardens at prices of 60 to 120 per kilogram. Prem Paija, president of the Dosalle Commercial Orange Farmers Group, said that the oranges produced in the village are being sold in a big way and the farmers are excited because of the increase in production.
Oranges produced in the district have been exported to markets including the district headquarters Beni, the capital Kathmandu, Pokhara, Butwal, Bhairawa, Narayangadh and others.
