Morang. The Khawas couple of Dangihat Bazaar, Belbari Municipality-9, Morang have sold tea and added a bigha of land to the same land. The couple, who have been selling tea continuously in the local Dangihat Bazaar for 25 years, have also increased their wealth and helped their children get higher education.
According to Swamkumari Khawas, who has been supporting her family of four by selling tea, the business is not complete, but on average, two and a half to three hundred cups of tea are sold daily. Currently, 30 liters of milk tea are sold.
After deducting all expenses, they earn at least 50 thousand rupees per month. When the shop was opened twenty-five years ago, the price of a cup of tea, which cost two rupees, has now increased to 20. Milk that was bought at Rs 13 per liter at that time is now Rs 80, the price has increased a lot.
Swamkumari said, ‘Land was cheap at that time, so we managed to add a bigha of land little by little with profit. At that time, two types of tea had to be made, ‘local’ and ‘special’, local tea was mixed with water, while special tea was made with milk only.’
At that time, local tea was priced at Rs 2 per cup and special tea was priced at Rs 3. Tea was sold with children in their arms, now they are young. Swamkumari’s husband, Serge Khawas, says that he has educated both his children up to higher secondary level with the income from this shop.
Swamkumari said that if you continue any business honestly, you will definitely succeed one day. ‘At that time, we used to go to the forest and bring firewood, a rickshaw used to bring firewood for Rs 200, now we use a gas stove,’ he says.
Local leaders, community leaders all come to have tea. They also get to know every piece of information about the community. Making tea has become not only an income, but a habit for the Khawas couple. They say they will continue to trade tea as long as their bodies allow them.
Local Baliram Rajbanshi is 76 years old. He walks half an hour to the shop to drink tea. ‘I have been accustomed to drinking tea at the hotel for years, so even though I am old, I do not get tired of drinking tea at home,’ says Rajbanshi.
I have been drinking tea at Dangihat since my father’s time. During my father’s time, Indian rupees were used, and I remember that a cup of tea cost two annas. I got used to coming and drinking tea with my father, says Rajbanshi.
