Chitwan. With the aim of making potato farming more commercial, the District Agriculture Office has been conducting research on potato varieties in Kharkhutte, Khairhani Municipality-10 here. The office has been conducting research on improved varieties of potatoes and indigenous and foreign hybrid varieties under the annual program. According to the office’s information officer, Suruchi Tripathi, research is being conducted on 10 different types of potatoes at this location.

He said that out of the 10 potato varieties, seven potato varieties have been brought from Europe and are being tested and researched. He said that these varieties are under testing and have not been listed. Tripathi said that further research will be done after digging the potatoes. Research on potato varieties has been being conducted in the field of farmer Krishna Prasad Aryal here. According to Aryal, although potato production here is high, there is no uniformity in market prices. He said that since traders want to buy at the lowest possible price, the potato variety should be established and the price should be brought to uniformity.

He informed that potatoes worth up to Rs 370 million are sold annually from this area. He said that if the variety of potatoes sought by traders and consumers can be planted, a large amount of potatoes can be grown from this area and the price will be higher. The varieties of potatoes that the Agriculture Office is studying here include 0.52, 25.7, Elber Stone Russet, Caymen, Sagita, Cuentera, and Innovator. Similarly, the office has also been researching Frisona, Santana and local blue varieties of potatoes.

A study is being conducted to determine whether industrial potatoes, which are needed for the production of French fries and chips, can be produced in the district, and the full results will be available after digging potatoes this year, said Jhalaknath Kandel, head of the District Agriculture Office. He said that the production, size, popularity, taste, pest infestation, ease of sale and distribution of the potatoes planted for testing are being studied compared to the traditional potatoes planted by farmers.
