Kathmandu. Climate experts have suggested that the Nepal government should take forward efforts to establish the issue of the Himalayas at the international level in an organized manner.
Experts have emphasized that the impact of climate change on the Himalayas should be established as a key priority at the ‘International Dialogue on Mountains, People and Climate’ conference to be held in Kathmandu in the second week of Jestha.
Recalling that Nepal has been continuously raising the issue of the Himalayas since 2009, they have argued that Nepal should now move forward in a way to establish this issue at the global level. Experts have also warned the government to scientifically and factually prove the impact of climate change on the economic, social, cultural, agricultural, tourism and other sectors of the people of Nepal’s mountainous region, and to create a situation where all the mountainous countries will maintain ownership of the issues of the mountainous region and advocate for a common agenda.
Talking about the stance and presentation that Nepal should take at the international conference, the experts drew the attention of the world community to the fact that the impact of climate change on the mountainous region is not only a problem of the mountainous countries but also a problem of the entire world, and emphasized the need to move forward towards leading countries with similar geographical conditions. They also emphasized the need to bring mountain countries together and establish a single voice on common issues and issues.
Policy Advisor at the United Nations Development Program Vijay Singh expressed his belief that if Nepal can build solidarity among the participating countries in the conference on the issue of advancing the issue of the Himalayan region by establishing scientific facts along with political commitment, it will create a smooth environment for access to the Climate Change Damage Fund. He emphasized that Nepal should also take the lead of the countries of the Himalayan region.
Similarly, climate expert Manjit Dhakal pointed out the need for Nepal to lead the countries with mountains, including the countries in the lower and upper coastal regions, as Nepal has been raising the mountain agenda in various international forums for the past 15 years. He said that the conference can play an effective role in highlighting the impact of climate change on humans as well as the mountainous regions, and in establishing that this problem is not only a problem of the Himalayan region and the countries with mountainous regions, but also of the world.
Climate finance expert Pravinman Singh said that the conference is important in taking forward the achievements made by Nepal in the Himalayan region in an organized manner, along with the continuous initiatives taken by Nepal over the past 15 years. He also brought up the need to give the message to the world community that Nepal can play an international leadership role in climate-related world conferences in identifying and mobilizing financial needs to address the problems of the Himalayan region.
Climate expert Dr. Bimal Raj Regmi said that Nepal should be able to create an environment for integrating the issues of the mountainous region through the conference and taking the lead. If the issues of the mountainous region can be globalized and everyone can be integrated into the issue, he expressed confidence that Nepal can lead the countries of the mountainous region in the world-class climate conference in the future. Representatives of the world’s mountainous countries, subject experts and representatives of partner organizations will participate in the conference to be held in Kathmandu on 29 and 30 June. It has been informed that the conference will have 8 different sessions focusing on 3 major topics: climate science and mountain solutions, common themes and mountain resources and opportunities.
