Surkhet. ‘Bulbule Lake in Surkhet,
Met this year at Chautari’
As soon as you hear this song from the film Bandhaki by Arjun Nepali and Sangita Pradhan, you immediately think of Bubble. Anyone who has not visited this lake feels like visiting it.
The name of the lake formed by the water that bubbled up from underground in the lower area of the Birendranagar Valley, surrounded by mountains on all sides, is Bulbule. This lake has recently become a favorite of tourists and has also become a source of internal income for Birendranagar Municipality.
Anyone who comes to Birendranagar, the capital of Karnali, for the first time, goes to see Bulbule Lake. The Bulbule Garden area, which makes you want to visit again and again after visiting once, has recently become a favorite of domestic and foreign tourists.
Located at an altitude of about 657 meters above sea level, Bulbule Lake has become even more of a favorite of tourists after motorized vehicles were introduced. Bulbule Lake, the main tourist attraction of Surkhet, has been expanded and made wider, and it is becoming worth visiting and seeing from all sides. You can now also ride a motorboat in the lake.
The area of the lake, which was 12,000 square meters, has been increased to 28,500 square meters. Now, after two motorboats were brought into operation in this lake, the number of domestic tourists has started to increase.
Spread over an area of 31.5 bighas, Bulbule is considered the main tourist destination of Karnali Province. Bulbule is also a favorite of every tourist coming to Karnali.
More tourists come to Bulbule during holidays. It is said that more than 500 tourists visit Bulbule daily. Since 2029 BS, the government has started protecting the bulbuls.
Nearby Kankrebihar also adds to the fun. The number of people who go here to visit the forest feast has started to increase. Especially on holidays, the number of tourists visiting the bulbuls has increased.
Nowadays, more than five thousand people come to visit the bulbuls on holidays, says Nirmala Bastola, a gardener working at the ticket counter under the Birendranagar Municipal Development Committee.
‘Nowadays, on an average, more than five hundred people come to observe the bulbuls, and the daily income from ticket sales is 15 thousand.’ Nirmala says that she earns up to 35,000 rupees during holidays.
Suggestions for further management
Domestic tourists who have visited Bulbule have pointed out that the municipality still needs to manage the park area. Purna Prasad Poudel, principal of Shiva Secondary School, Dhuliabit, who came for the forest feast, suggested that structures including public toilets should be built and managed along with the garden.
‘Current times mean that every citizen needs fun, suitable places for that are being created, but it seems that it still needs to be managed,’ he said.
Principal Poudel suggested that an environment should be created that allows people to roam around at night, from public toilets. He said that if infrastructure including lighting, water, charging stations and other facilities are built and promoted, Bulbule can become a major source of internal income for Birendranagar.
Tanka Prasad Pokharel, who visited Bulbule, also said that Bulbule is an important and worth visiting place in itself and suggested that the government should work to attract domestic tourists as well as foreign tourists.
‘We need to make it more attractive and worth seeing, since this is also the provincial government, the local and provincial governments should come up with special plans.’ He says. Noting that people from outside come to Surkhet to visit Bulbule, teacher Kamala Khatiwada also emphasized that Bulbule Park should be built so that it remains everyone’s choice.
Businessman Om Prakash Tiwari suggested that tourist areas including Bulbule and Kankrebihar should be planned so that they become tourists’ choices, which could help the economy.
If it could be made attractive to tourists, business would also increase in Birendranagar, the capital of Karnali Province, and employment would be created, and the compulsion to go abroad would be reduced. Another businessman, Ramesh Khadka, also has a similar opinion. He said that a plan should be made to attract domestic and foreign tourists while preserving the identity of Bulbule.
Stakeholders have suggested that internal income can be increased by organizing and promoting tourist areas like Bulbule, Kankre Bihar and Deuti Bajyai in the provincial capital.
The Karnali Provincial Government has urged all parties to cooperate in implementing the plan, saying that it has been made to create an environment for people to visit Karnali along with the identity of the tourist area.
