In the last 1 year, 70,915 Nepalis have gone abroad for permanent residence. The Department of Immigration gave this information during the discussion on immigration held by the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee on Sunday.
The department has informed that the number of Nepalis going abroad for permanent residence in 2023 is 70,915. Speaking at the committee meeting, Director General of the Department of Immigration Rudrasingh Tamang said that 1,63,838 Nepali citizens went abroad in 2023 and 1,263,469 entered. He said that out of those who went abroad in the last 1 year, 340,369 Nepalis stayed abroad. He said that during this period, 18,542 Nepalis went abroad for studies, 92,349 on temporary residence visas, 70,915 on permanent residence visas, and 20,613 on dependent visas after marriage.
He claimed that 292,240 Nepalis went abroad in one way or another in the last 1 year to live abroad. Director General Tamang stressed that the number of citizens who went to third countries through Indian soil was not included in the 292,240 figure. He said that 88,415 Nepali citizens went to various countries as workers in 2023. He said that 167,485 Nepalis are abroad on family visas of their children living abroad. He said that the Department of Statistics has 14,515 citizens who went abroad from Nepal for tourism and religious purposes. He said that the simple arrangement regarding the departure of Nepali citizens abroad in the Immigration Procedure 2065 has been complicated by the Nepal Government Secretary-level decision on Falgun 26, 2078. He said that it is necessary to amend the regulations to make the Immigration Bill relevant to the current times.
He mentioned that it is necessary to simplify the existing visas in Nepal by changing and adding more. He claimed that even though one million tourists have entered Nepal now, according to the statistics of the Immigration Department, one million tourists have not entered Nepal. He said that there is a need to add other types of visas such as study visas, worker visas, retirement visas, medical visas, religious visas, sports visas and others. He said that 6,132 Nepali citizens were deported from the airport in 2023 due to the 17-point directive.
Rudra Singh Tamang said that 459 foreign citizens were deported from Nepal for various reasons in 2023. He said that 559 people were deported in 2017, 678 in 2018, 671 in 2019, 332 in 2020, 388 in 2021 and 570 in 2022. He said that the problem arose due to the lack of clarity regarding the visa fees for foreigners of Nepali origin who have obtained non-resident Nepali citizenship. —News Agency Nepal
