235 Nafiz members get accident insurance worth Rs. 165 million

Kathmandu. The members of the Nepal Economic Journalists Association (NAFIJ) have got a ‘group accident insurance’ worth Rs 165 million. NAFIJ has taken out group accident insurance for its 235 members and advisors at the rate of Rs 700,000 each.

On Wednesday, an agreement was signed between two non-life insurance companies and NAFIJ regarding group accident insurance. NAFIJ has taken out group accident insurance for 235 people with Sagarmatha Lumbini Insurance (Salico) and Siddhartha Premier Insurance.

The total amount insured is Rs 164.5 million. The agreement was signed by Salico Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Chunki Chhetri, Siddhartha Insurance Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Birendra Bahadur Vaidawar, and Nafiz Chairman Menuka Karki.

As per the agreement, each member of Nafiz has been provided with accident insurance at the rate of Rs 700,000 per person. Nafiz President Menuka Karki said that journalists who have to work in the field every day are at risk of various types of accidents, so their members have been insured to bear such risks.

“There are all kinds of risks in the field, journalists are deployed in the field taking such risks,” said President Karki. “Therefore, Nafiz has insured all its members at the rate of 700,000 per member in collaboration with two non-life insurance companies to cover the cost if their members get into any kind of accident. This has been a historic and proud work for Nafiz.”

President Karki said that Nafiz is aware of health risks as well as capacity building of its members. At the insurance agreement exchange program, Chhetri, CEO of Sagarmatha Lumbini Insurance, expressed his belief that accident insurance will help in the safety of journalists and further contribute to the flow of reliable information.

Similarly, Vaidawar, CEO of Siddhartha Premier Insurance, said that Nafiz has further encouraged journalists to work in the field by insuring its member journalists, and he was happy to collaborate with Nafiz.
