A new gold and silver showroom called Sumnima Jewellery and Collection has opened in Aldershot, the city with the highest population of Nepalis in the UK. Singer Shyam Samsohang Rai, who has recently settled permanently in the UK, has started the business with singer Januka Rai.
In Aldershot, UK, yesterday, the opening ceremony was jointly held by Hampshire County Councillor Bill O’Donovan and famous actress and playwright Sirjana Subba, under the chief guestship of Major Retired Yogesh Koyi Rai, President of the Nepali Jewellery Association and President of the Adivasi Janajati Federation.
Aldershot, which is close to London, is not only a place for residence but also for Nepalese people. It is also developing as a commercial center. Nepalis have opened dozens of restaurants and grocery stores. About a dozen gold and silver shops are operating here.
Singer Shyam said that they were attracted to the gold business because Nepalis have always been fond of gold and silver jewelry and have started buying gold as a safe investment. Singer Januka Rai said that in addition to gold and silver, Sumnima Jewellery and Collection also sells various ethnic costumes and handicrafts.
‘In our shop, apart from gold and silver, we sell handicrafts, including the Nepali pride Khukri, costumes of all ethnic groups, their cultural instruments and various decorative items at reasonable prices. You can come to the store and buy your choice, and we have also made arrangements for worldwide delivery through online,’ Januka added.
Singer Januka Rai Mundumi is famous as a singer and has also sung in the Nepali drama film Binayo.
Singer Shyam said, ‘Since we have a lot of business experience in Nepal, starting a new business in a new place is not much of a challenge. Since the investment is a little big, we will move forward by adopting an aggressive business strategy accordingly.’
Singer Shyam’s songs like Murchungama Roye Ma Sarangima Reteye, Maichang Hau Maichang Hau and others are popular. Recently, he has also gained popularity as the promoter of Mundum Trail. A memoir book titled ‘Mundum Trail’ was released last year.
